Before every speaking engagement—especially after you are (or were) first elected, do you ask yourself whom you want to impress in your audience, and what you need to say to do so? Or are you above taking the trouble?

Absolutely true! Failure to heed the sub-text of Nixon’s words can make you a “one-term wonder”.
