Better we lose the election than mislead the people.

Do you believe that? If you do, nod your head discreetly, lest your more militant colleagues see you and take you to task, or worse.

Now that’s a line that’s never been repeated! Yet Stevenson was a successful politician, the 31st governor of Illinois. He had experience with more than one election, two at the presidential level, both of which he lost—apparently without misleading anyone!
